Andrews Valley Rail Tours: Pedaling Through History

Often times, it can be difficult to find your next vacation spot or a spur-of-the-moment weekend getaway. Andrews Valley Rail Tours in North Carolina offers a nice change. It’s different from beaches or amusement parks people usually choose.

It offers a little bit of history, amazing mountain views, and an experience that feels both peaceful and refreshing at the same time. From the moment you start pedaling, you’re not just taking a scenic ride, you’re stepping into a slower pace of life where the scenery does most of the talking.

Sometimes the best trips aren’t the biggest or the most crowded ones, but the ones that let you breathe a little easier, slow down, and actually take it all in.

Coffee Before the Journey

Before heading to Andrews Valley Rail Tours, I highly recommend stopping at Morning Fog Coffee & Eats to fuel up. This cozy spot is just a couple of minutes from the rail bike adventure. It is the perfect place to start your day before the experience.

Stop in for your favorite coffee and breakfast before your ride, or come back for lunch afterward. Just be sure to plan ahead, since they are open from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every day except Tuesday, when they are closed.

My rail bike tour started around 8:30 a.m. that Saturday morning, so my friend and I stopped in for coffee and breakfast beforehand. I highly recommend the hot mocha latte paired with a jalapeño bagel sandwich.

After some much-needed caffeine and carbs, you’ll be ready to make your way to the rail bike tour.

Exploring the Mountains in a New Way

Always looking for a new way to view the mountainous areas of the Appalachian Region? Then look no farther than the Andrew’s Valley Rail Tour. Forget the hiking, when there is a new way to explore these beautiful views. From walking to cycling you will go just off the main area of downtown Andrews straight to Andrews Depot before experiencing this 8.5 to 9 mile round trip.

Booking Your Experience

When booking this experience, you go through a few steps with multiple options. These include the type of experience, date, time, and number of participants. The experiences include the Andrews Valley Railbike Tour, Choo Choo Speeder Ride, Conductor Experience, and Passenger Cart Ride. The season runs from mid to late April through mid November with four time slots from morning to evening.

The Railbike Experience

The tour my friend and I chose is the basic Andrews Valley Railbike. Each rail bike has four seats, and one person serves as the driver or brakeman, controlling speed and safety. Since there were only two of us, we rode with two other people. Our rail bike did not have electric assist, so we relied on pedaling. When needed, staff can connect your rail bike to a conductor or an electric-assist bike to help with hills.

But just remember, never feel ashamed to ask for help, because that is exactly what the electric assist carts are for. After all, this is the Appalachian Region, which usually means you will hit a few uphill stretches as you move through the beautiful mountains.

All Aboard the Andrews Valley Rail Tour

After booking this unique adventure, you’ll be asked to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure to go through the mandatory safety instructions. During this time, you’ll also sign the required paperwork before taking your seat and beginning your journey, which lasts approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.

Once everyone is seated, belongings are stored, and seatbelts are fastened, the driver learns the brake controls and the adventure begins. On non-electric railbikes, pedaling feels fairly easy at first. You pass rolling pastures and enjoy beautiful mountain scenery with little effort. As the trail climbs uphill, the ride becomes more tiring if you are not used to it.

Don’t worry, though. If you need a little extra help, staff can set you up with an electric-assist railbike that makes the climb much easier. Once you reach the turnaround point, the return trip is mostly downhill. You can relax, enjoy the views, and let the railbike coast while the driver occasionally uses the brake to control speed.

Before you know it, you’ll be pulling back into the station. Once the railbike comes to a complete stop, you can hop off and reflect on this one-of-a-kind adventure.

History Behind the Tour

Before seating is assigned, staff will go over a few basic rules and share some history about Andrews Valley Rail Tours before the journey begins. If you have any questions about the tour, you can ask them during the quick break after the tunnel, or wait until the end of the ride.

One of the most well-known parts of the tour is the Valley River Tunnel along the route. This tunnel was hand-chiseled by Southern Railway workers in 1849 and is approximately 346 feet long. As you enter, you may notice a temperature drop of around 15 to 20+ degrees, which honestly feels like a nice break from the summer heat.

This rail line, now used for the railbike tour, once served as a critical route through mountains that were originally very isolated in North Carolina. It carried everything from lumber and leather to passengers, bringing life and connection to the area in a way that would always be remembered.

A Perfect Mountain Day with the Perfect Scenery

If you’re looking for a quick, quiet mountain getaway somewhere in North Carolina, look no further than Andrews, North Carolina. While visiting, be sure to head over to Andrews Valley Rail Tours for a whole new biking experience.

From the moment your journey begins, you will slow down and settle into the rhythm of the mountains. Along the way, you feel connected to nature with open meadows, flowing creeks, and cool breezes in the tunnel. Birds sing softly in the background throughout the ride. It is the kind of experience that makes you stop and take everything in.
